Dog Beach Rules in Charleston: A Must-Know Guide for Pet Parents!

Charleston’s beaches aren’t just for soaking up the sun—they’re a playground for our four-legged besties too! Whether you’re a local or just visiting, nothing beats watching your pup live their best life in the sand and surf. But before you leash up and head out, let’s talk about the rules (because no one wants a beach day ruined by a ticket!).

Off-Leash vs. On-Leash: Know Before You Go

Each Charleston-area beach has its own pet policies, and they change throughout the year. Here’s your quick guide to where and when your dog can roam free:

Folly Beach

  • May 1 – September 30: No dogs allowed on the beach between 10 AM and 6 PM.

  • October 1 – April 30: Dogs are welcome anytime but must stay on a leash.

  • And of course, always clean up after your pup—it’s the right thing to do!

Isle of Palms

  • Dogs can run off-leash from 5 AM – 9 AM year-round.

  • Outside of those hours, they must be leashed.

  • Owners must have a leash on hand at all times, even during off-leash hours.

  • Oh, and yes—pick up after your pup (it’s the golden rule of dog parenting!).

Sullivan’s Island

  • May 1 – September 30: Off-leash hours are 5 AM – 10 AM, but dogs aren’t allowed on the beach from 10 AM – 6 PM.

  • October 1 – April 30: Dogs can be off-leash from 5 AM – 12 PM, but must be leashed after that.

  • A town permit is required for all dogs on the beach (yes, even if you’re just visiting!).

Beach Etiquette & Safety Tips

A little courtesy and preparation go a long way toward making sure everyone—two-legged and four-legged—has an amazing beach day. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Know the Rules: A quick check before you go saves you from any surprises.

  • Bring Fresh Water: Salt water = dehydrated, unhappy pup. Keep ‘em hydrated!

  • Mind the Hot Sand: If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for their paws.

  • Pick Up After Your Dog: No one likes stepping in surprises.

  • Respect Wildlife: Keep your pup away from nesting sea turtles and other protected areas.
